America's 10 highest-paid CEOs

Sanjay Jha

The US has entered 17th straight month of recession, but the pay package of its highest-paid CEO exceeds $100 million (over Rs 500 crore) - a figure more than 10 times that of his counterpart in the country of his birth, where economy is still growing at a decent rate.

America's top earning business head, Motorola's co-CEO is India-born Sanjay Jha, who got a package of $104 million in 2008.

In comparison, India's top-paid business chief, Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries, got a total remuneration of Rs 44.02 crore (Rs 440.2 million) in 2007-08, the last fiscal year for which the salary data is available.

Ambani's package is just about one-fifth of the same for even Vikram Pandit, also and India-born person and CEO of banking behemoth Citigroup, which had to seek the US government's support to keep running.

With a total payout of over $104 million in 2008, Jha is the only CEO to get a compensation package exceeding $100 million.

Jha joined Motorola in 2008 and serves as co-chief executive officer of Motorola, Inc. and chief executive officer of Motorola's Mobile Devices business.

He is also a member of Motorola's board of directors. Prior to joining Motorola, Jha served as chief operating officer of Qualcomm Incorporated where he oversaw corporate research and development. Jha began his career at Qualcomm in 1994 as a senior engineer.

Indra Nooyi

India-born Vikram Pandit, is the 4th highest paid CEO and PepsiCo's Indra Nooyi is ranked 36th with a pay package of $13.98 million.

In India, none of the business executives get paid even $10 million (Rs 50 crore), while there are just about two dozen people getting more than Rs 10 crore (Rs 100 million).

These include RIL's Mukesh Ambani, Sun TV Network's Kalanithi Maran and Kavery Maran, Madras Cement's P R Ramasubrahmanya Rajha, Reliance Communications' Anil Ambani, Ranbaxy Labs' Malvinder Mohan Singh, Bharti Airtel's Sunil Mittal, Jindal Steel's Naveen Jindal, JSW Steel's Sajjan Jindal and Grasim Industries' Kumar Mangalam Birla.

Ray Irani

Ray Irani comes second among the top paid CEOs. Irani has been chairman and CEO of Occidental since 1990. He was chief operating officer from 1984 to 1990.

He was chairman of the Board of Directors of Nexen Inc. from 1987 to 1999. He is also a director of Wynn Resorts, Limited and TCW Group.

The WSJ CEO Compensation Study is based on an analysis of CEO pay of the first 200 US companies with fiscal year 2008 revenue of at least $5 billion that filed their proxy statements between October 2008 and March 2009.

The median salaries and bonuses for the chief executives of 200 big U.S. companies fell by 8.5 per cent to $2.24 million, according to a study by The Wall Street Journal in association with the Hay Group, a management consulting firm.

Including the awarded value of stock, stock options and other long-term incentives, total direct compensation for chiefs slipped 3.4 per cent to a median of $7.6 million.

Robert Iger

Irani is followed by Walt Disney's CEO Robert Iger ($49.7 million) at the third position.

Iger is the sixth CEO in The Walt Disney Company's 82-year history.

Iger has also served as president and chief operating officer of The Walt Disney Company since June 2000. Iger is also became a member of Disney's board of directors at this time.

He began his career at ABC in 1974. He officially joined the Disney senior management team in 1996 as chairman of the Disney-owned ABC Group and in 1999, was given the additional responsibility of president, Walt Disney International.

In the wake of the financial meltdown, huge executive compensations at American companies had come in for severe criticism from different quarters. The payouts for chief executives dropped sharply at banks and brokerages.

The survey noted that median annual cash compensation for CEOs in the financial industry fell 43 per cent, to $9,76,000.

Vikram Pandit

India-born Vikram Pandit is the 4th highest paid CEO with a total compensation of $38.22 million.

He has now vowed to take just $1 as salary till Citigroup returns to profitability.

Pandit was named Citigroup CEO in December 2007 and received three million stock options and almost 1.1 million shares of restricted stock in January 2008 as a signing bonus.

Louis C. Camilleri

With a total salary package of $36.36 million, Louis C. Camilleri is the 6th highest paid CEO in the US .

Camilleri became chairman and chief executive officer of Philip Morris International on 28 March 2008, following the spin-off of Philip Morris International from Altria Group, Inc.

Prior to this, he had been chairman and chief executive officer of Altria since 2002. He has also served as Altria's senior vice president and chief financial officer since November 1996.

Jack A. Fusco

Jack A. Fusco is the 6th highest paid CEO with a compensation of $32.40 million.

Jack A. Fusco is the president and chief executive officer of Calpine Corporation and as a member of its Board of Directors since August 10, 2008.

From July 2004 to February 2006, Fusco served as the chairman and CEO of Texas Genco LLC. From 2002 through July 2004, Fusco was an exclusive energy investment advisor for Texas Pacific Group.

He started his career as an operator at power plants in California and has 25 years of experience in the power industry.

Kenneth Chenault

Kenneth I Chenault, CEO, American Express is the 7th highest paid CEO with a salary package of $28.56 million.

He joined American Express in 1981 as a strategy planner. He became the president and COO in 1997. In 2001, he became the third black CEO of a Fortune 500 company in history.

Gregory Q. Brown

Gregory Q. Brown, co-CEO of Motorola comes next in the list with a package of $27.49 million. Brown joined Motorola in 2003 and was elected to the company's board of directors in 2007.

Brown oversees the strategic and operational direction of the Illinois based, $30.1 billion telecommunications and enterprise company.

John J Donahoe

John J Donahoe with a compensation of $24.41 is the 9th highest paid CEO.

Donahoe became the president and CEO of eBay Inc on March 31, 2008. He has the global responsibility for growing each of the company's business units, which include eBay Marketplaces, PayPal and Skype. John came to eBay in February 2005 as president of eBay Marketplaces, responsible eBay's global ecommerce businesses. Prior to eBay, John worked with Bain & Company, a worldwide consulting firm for 20 years.

James T. Hackett

James Hackett with a total compensation $21.62 million, is the 10th top paid CEO in the US .

Hackett was named president and chief executive officer of Anadarko Petroleum in December 2003, and chairman of the board of the company in January 2006.

Prior to joining the company, Hackett was the chief operating officer of Devon Energy Corporation from April 2003 to December 2003.

IIT-Madras and Kamal hassan's Screenwriting class

In a first of its kind initiative, actor Kamal Haasan has tied up with the Indian Institute of Technology to conduct an international workshop and seminar on screen writing. According to a press release, only serious candidates with basic qualifications will be considered for the workshop. About 250 candidates will be selected for this workshop. This week long class will be conducted at the IIT-M campus from May 29th to June 3rd. Jean Claude Carriere, an ace writer and Oscar Winner, will participate in the workshop to share his experiences through video conferencing. Apart from this, Kamal will also take part in the discussions.

The screenwriting workshop will be conducted by K. Hariharan, Director of the L.V. Prasad Film and TV Academy, Anjum Rajabali, Professional screenwriter and head of departments of screenwriting at Film and TV Institute, Pune and Whistling Woods, Mumbai and Atul Tiwari, Professional screenwriter and well known playwright.

Young entrepreneur in the election fray

A typical case of rags to riches story, an IIM-A graduate and a successful entrepreneur has taken a plunge into politics by contesting the Lok Sabha polls, with an aim to clear the "silt" of it.

Sarath Babu, the proprietor of Food King that has business spread over four states, is an independent candidate from the elite South Chennai constituency and has a vision for his country -- 'a hunger-free India by another 20 years' where 'unemployment will be non-existent'.

As his campaign managers scamper through the electioneering schedule, Babu, MTV's Youth Icon 2008, says that he envisaged making South Chennai a model constituency. "Instead of remaining an outsider to politics I decided to step into it and clean it of the silt.. Someone has to bell the cat. So I decided to contest the elections," Says Babu.

Now an inspiring force to many aspiring entrepreneurs, Babu rose from a humble beginning selling 'idlis' before getting into the prestigious management school in Ahmedabad and launching his dream company Food King with a small investment of Rs 2,000 in 2006. With his "committed team" taking care of the company as of now, Babu says he was devoting most of his time to campaigning, claiming he covered nearly 100 temples in the constituency on Tuesday.

He is undeterred by the fact that two political heavyweights-- R S Barathy of DMK, also a local man, and BJP state president L Ganesan are trying their fortunes from the constituency, -- as he counts on "the positive response" during campaigning.

Backed by a young team of volunteers, the entrepreneur is pinning his hopes on young voters and is using all means, including the virtual world, to reach out to them. While Babu has a dedicated website, his campaign managers constantly update the profiles in his blogs and keep him networked on sites such as the Orkut.

பிரச்சினை பொறாமைக்கார சமுதாயத்தின் மீது மட்டுமல்ல. மென்பொருள் அலுவலர்களிடமும் உண்டு. சமூகத்தை விட்டு அவர்கள் பொதுவாக விலகிச்செல்வது மாதிரியான தோற்றம் ஏற்பட்டிருக்கிறது. ஐ.டி.யில் வேலை பார்ப்பவன் பிராமணன் மாதிரி நாலுபேர் மத்தியில் தனித்து தெரிகிறான். இங்கிலாந்திலோ, அமெரிக்காவிலோ பிறந்த பரம்பரை மாதிரி ஃபிலிம் காட்டுகிறான். தன்னுடைய நியாயங்களை நிதானமாக புரியவைப்பதை தவிர்த்து தங்கள் மீதான சமூகத்தாக்குதலை மூர்க்கத்தனமாக எதிர்கொள்ளுகிறான். மென்பொருள் அலுவலர்களை குஷிப்படுத்துவதாக நினைத்து கடந்தவாரம் ஆனந்தவிகடனில் செல்வேந்திரன் எழுதிய கவிதை போன்ற தோற்றத்தில் இருந்த ஒரு விஷயம் கூட நிறையப்பேரை எரிச்சல் தான் படுத்தியிருக்கிறது. ”இவனுங்களுக்கு மட்டும் என்ன கொம்பா முளைச்சிருக்கு?” என்பதே மற்றவர்களின் மனோபாவம்.

இவர்களைப் போல இல்லாமல் இரா.முருகன் நயமாக மென்பொருள்துறைக்கு வக்காலத்து வாங்குகிறார். ’மென்பொருள் துறை சார்ந்து தமிழில் வெளிவரும் முதல்நாவல்’ என்ற அடைமொழியோடு, ஐடியில் வேலை பார்ப்பவனும் சாதாரண மனிதன் தான். எல்லோரையும் மாதிரி பிறந்தவன் தான். அவனுக்கும் காதல் உண்டு, காமம் உண்டு, பசியுண்டு, ஆசை ஆசாபாசங்கள் உண்டு, பிளேடால் கிழித்தால் அவனுக்கும் சிகப்பு கலரில் தான் இரத்தம் வழியும், அழுதால் உப்புச்சுவையோடு தான் கண்ணீர் வரும் என்றெல்லாம் பொறுமையாக பாடமெடுக்கிறார். புரியவைக்கிறார். மென்பொருள் பணியாளர்கள் தங்கள் மீது பொறாமைப்படும் சமூகத்தை எதிர்கொள்ளும் சரியான வழிமுறை இந்நாவல். நாவலாசிரியரும் ஒரு மூத்த தலைமுறை மென்பொருளாளர் என்றே தெரிகிறது.

சுவாரஸ்யமான சம்பவங்களோடு கதை இவ்வாறே விரிவடைகிறது. 90களில் ஏற்பட்ட ஐ.டி மறுமலர்ச்சி, செப்.11 சம்பவத்துக்குப் பிறகான ஐ.டி. வீழ்ச்சி என்று கதையின் களமும், தளமும் அபாரம். குடிபோதையில் எவளோ ஒருவளை சம்போகித்துவிட்டு சுதர்சன் பிதற்றும் அத்தியாயங்களில் வாசகனுக்கும் நெஞ்சு படபடவென்று அடித்துக் கொள்கிறது. மிளகாய் மண்டி ராஜேந்திரன், இங்கிலாந்து ஜெஃப்ரி, மென்பொருள் காதலி சந்தியா, தாய்லாந்து அழகி னாய், சுபர்ணா, பாஸ்போர்ட் தொலைத்த ராவ் என்று கதாபாத்திரங்கள் கூர்மையான உளியால் செதுக்கப்பட்டவை.

ஒவ்வொரு விஷயத்தையும் விலாவரியாக எளிமையான மொழியில் கதை சொல்லிக்கொண்டே போகும் இரா.முருகன் சுஜாதாவின் இரண்டாவது வெர்ஷன். விகடன், குமுதம் மாதிரி வெகுஜன இதழ்கள் இவரொரு தீவிர இலக்கிய கும்மி என்று நினைத்து ஒதுங்கிப் போய்விட்டார்களோ என்னவோ தெரியவில்லை. முருகனின் எழுத்து நடுத்தர வர்க்கத்தை கச்சிதமாக டார்கெட் செய்து அடிக்கிறது.

சுவாரஸ்யமாக, விலாவரியான சம்பவங்கள் மற்றும் வசனங்களோடு ஜோராய் கிண்டி குதிரை மாதிரி ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்த நாவல் அவசர அவசரமாக முடிக்கப்பட்டது போல தோன்றுகிறது. 2001 செப்.11க்குப் பிறகு வெகுவேகமாக எடிட்டப்பட்டு நாவல் நாடகத்தனமாய் ஓடுகிறது. க்ளைமேக்ஸ் வலிந்து திணிக்கப்பட்ட அநியாய சோகம். சுதர்ஸனை சாம்பார் வாளியெல்லாம் தூக்க வைத்திருக்க வேண்டியதில்லை.
